Girl's Guide to Wine By Roy Bradbrook This slim paperback is designed for "Girls" who like wine but may, um, lack experience. British wine writer Susy Atkins has produced an informative, understandable, at times funny volume. The caricatures of different wine personalities often hit the mark: readers will have fun labeling "friends" under such headings as "Merlot Marco" (who doesn't care what the wine tastes like as long as it's expensive and comes in a glitzy package) and "Cheapskate Kate" (who brings cheap plonk to your party and spends the night ferreting out, then opening your best white Bordeaux). Any book that demystifies wine drinking and clearly explains the basics should be welcomed. And dare I say that even a mere "Guy" would learn something, if only some insider info into the thought patterns of his "Girl." |
