"An Inquisitive Wine
Game with a Strategic Finish"
Ever fantasized about owning a wine region? Enjoy showing off your vinous knowledge? Then this board game (available from Cheetah of New York, $39.95, www.winegame.com), a deft hybrid of Monopoly™ and Trivial Pursuit™, is for you. Players must answer multiple-choice, grape-related questions---why is 'Botrytis cinerea' a welcome visitor to some vineyards? What is Sancerre's major white varietal?---to buy wine regions. Sometimes an inspired guess can make you look like Jancis Robinson or Hugh Johnson. (Don't know who they are? Their books make excellent cheat sheets!) Regions are priced from a "modest" $12 million for Galicia to a lofty $24 million for the more prestigious Bordeaux or the Napa Valley. An end-game strategy can easily turn an apparent winner into a loser (but we're not giving that away). -RB |
